Yep, Phil Did It!

Marketing with Credibility

As predicted, Phil Van Treuren won his Council-at-Large seat.

In a follow-up to last month’s blog post, Sending Tiny Credible Signals That Go Beyond Words, I thought I’d share an email I received from Phil this morning:

From: Phil Van Treuren
Date: November 4, 2009
Title: You Are Nostradamus

Subject: Tom, you are the man. You were right, I beat everyone in the city, including the incumbents, was the top vote getter out of all four candidates. When are we going to get to meet face-to-face? Thanks again! – Phil Van Treuren

In the cut-throat business of politics, Phil won the hearts of voters by sending them tiny signals that elevate credibility, taking his campaign beyond words. Phil knows that trust understands a language that does not rely on words, and that’s why he took a “show, don’t tell” approach with his campaign.

Oh, and did I mention that Phil ran as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic town?

If you want to learn the communication techniques Phil used to win his campaign, go back and read my original post. Applying these methods to your marketing will help you speak more credibly and win your customer’s trust.

Congratulations to Phil – he also worked social media to his advantage. I saw that he thanked people who voted, using FB comments. Just they that voted – not necessarily for him. If this is an example of his marketing savvy, I say he’ll go a long way. :-)

    Tom,

    3 Things.

    1. Nice Work

    2. Your new website Kicks Ass, like you advice and counsel.

    3. There is no 3., I was kidding.

    Cheers Tom

Michele, you’re exactly right. I’ve never even met Phil, and I can tell you he knows what he’s doing. Very savvy.

Ken, my man, thanks so much for the encouragement. You’re the best.

Tom…how long will it be until Brett is working for you? Or maybe he should just retain you with a very large fee! Great call. Interesting case. And not once did I see even a mention of issues or politics. Trust trumps all!

Credibility & Transparency & Genuine Good Will – I’d take that in my elected officials every day and twice on Sunday!

I predict that the concept of Democrat & Republican will begin to fade away as people start to align themselves with honest, caring people versus slick double talkers, regardless of party affiliation.

Dennis: Lol. Yep, maybe Brett can just retain me, I like flying solo ;-) It’s fascinating that Phil mostly asked citizens to have a conversation about what was important to them. I don’t recall any mention of issues or politics.

Phil: I hope you’re right. We need to reshuffle the deck in a way that brings honest people to the forefront of politics.
